The big tech industry’ claim about the climate benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) don’t hold up, according to this new report. It looks at 154 statements claiming AI will serve as a new climate benefit and finds that 74% are unproven. This new report by Ketan Joshi was commissioned and published by Beyond Fossil Fuels, Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD), Friends of the Earth U.S. Green Web Foundation, Stand.earth and us.
Not only were the claims unproven, there wasn’t a single case showing consumer generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot delivering material, verifiable emissions reductions. Instead, vague promises of FUTURE climate benefits are being used to justify a rapid expansion of data centres while driving new fossil fuel demand TODAY.
